Wie im Deutschen gibt es im Englischen eine Reihe von gängigen Ankürzungen, die allerdings häufig aufs Lateinische zurückgehen. Ihre Bedeutung ist zwar allgemein bekannt, nicht aber unbedingt die Langform:
